“These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily [to find out] whether these things were so.” Acts 17:11
The Bible commends those who are fair-minded, those who will not only receive the Word with all readiness but whom will also search out the Scriptures to see if what they were receiving was true or not.
In studying the Bible I have been told, and I agree, that the best commentary on the Bible is the Bible. In other words, the Bible will explain itself if you give it a chance to. We are suppose to study God’s word with diligence, and some of the most effective speakers of Gods Word taught it line upon line, precept upon precept (even though they were mocked for doing so, see Isaiah 28:13a).
The Bible also teaches us that it is the Holy Spirit who will instruct us in all knowledge, and it His anointing that we need in order to understand the Word correctly (1 Cor. 2:1-16, 1 John 2:27, John 14:26). We also need Jesus to open our understanding that we might correctly understand the Scriptures (Luke 24:35). And finally, we need to do our own part in responding to the teaching of the Holy Spirit, after allowing Jesus to open our understanding through prayer. How can we do our part? “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15.
I will be adding another section to this blog where I will be posting up my sermon notes for you to study along with me, or to use as a resource. Also if you happen to go to the church and wanted to know more of what I didn’t have the time to say you can see the rest here. I don’t claim perfection in these notes, but they are a general collection of my thoughts and other peoples thoughts as I attempted to respond to the Lord’s teaching and being diligent to do my part to study. Eventually I would like to get the sermons recorded posted on here some how, but for now just the notes will have to do.
What I ask from you is the same I ask of myself anytime I am reading another believers thoughts on God’s Word. Pray for discernment, ask God to show you what is of Him and what is not, and ask Him to help you to teach only His truth to others. Above all else though, learn from the Person of Christ, through the aid of the Person of the Holy Spirit, so that you can better know the heart of the Person of the Father, giving glory to the Triune God.
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. Do not be like the horse [or] like the mule, [Which] have no understanding, Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, Else they will not come near you. Many sorrows [shall be] to the wicked; But he who trusts in the LORD, mercy shall surround him. Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you righteous; And shout for joy, all [you] upright in heart!” Psalms 32:8-11
