Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. -Matthew 5:6
We are all hungry and thirsty in one way or another. We are all looking to be filled. Whether that pursuit is of love, comfort, understanding, pleasure, company, etc., in the end we all are hungry and thirsty. The thing about hunger and thirst is that once you satisfy it, it doesn’t last very long. It isn’t long until your stomach is grumbling for more food or your mouth is parched for the cool touch of water.
Perhaps we never become full in this world though because we are all seeking the wrong thing. Jesus here promises that happy and blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Strong’s Bible dictionary defines righteousness as
in a broad sense: state of him who is as he ought to be, righteousness, the condition acceptable to God…
integrity, virtue, purity of life, rightness, correctness of thinking feeling, and acting
This is what we must hunger and thirst after in order to finally be filled with happiness. The base desire of hunger and thirst is one of the strongest desires and needs of the human psyche, and our spiritual hunger and thirst should carry us directly to God’s righteousness if we want to be filled. All people have this spiritual hunger and thirst, they just are trying to fill it with junk food that can never satisfy them.
Until you are right with God you will go on hungry and thirsty, unable to fill the gaping hole in your soul for long. Go to Jesus with your spiritual thirst and spiritual hunger. You will be filled with His righteousness.
